The sperm improvement methods – swim-up, density-gradient sperm separation and magnetic sperm separation – employed here at AAFC, aim to select and isolate the best sperm candidates for Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ARTs). With ARTs, semen samples must first be processed before used for insemination. In nature, the sperms that reach an egg separate themselves from the ejaculate as they pass through the cervical mucus. In the laboratory, the sperm improvement methods that are used are intended to replicate this natural process as closely as possible.
